So in this video, I am going to show you guys how to save a bit of money on your remarketing campaigns, especially if you feel like you’re spending a little too much.
This is something that I feel like is a bit of a flaw in the new Ad Words campaign system and it shouldn’t be there but it is and it’s usually checked.
This thing I’m talking about, it’s between conservative and aggressive targeting. Okay?
It’s usually checked conservative, which is just allowing Google to go outside your actual remarketing audience and see if they can find more.
And this is happening more and more with artificial intelligence and campaigns being more and more automated. But I want to show you this setting because it can make a lot of difference.
So over here on your remarketing campaign, 30-day remarketing campaign, you’re going to click on the actual ad group. Now, I get very high click-through rates on my campaigns because of these banner ads. Just a little side notes. These are custom made, very engaging. Okay? So these banner ads get really good click-through rates, but I still was spending too much for my audience.
So you have to go down here to settings, and then you have to click ‘edit ad group’ ‘group targeting’. Under ‘group targeting’ you can see something called ‘automated targeting’. It’s under settings, and this is not easy to find. ‘Automated targeting’ a lot of times this is what’s checked, ‘conservative automation’.
This means Google is going outside of your remarketing audience, which isn’t good. Okay. You don’t want that. Nor do you want aggressive targeting. If it’s a remarketing audience, you only want your ads being shown to that audience.
So what you need to do is turn this off. No automated targeting. Hit save, and then that will eliminate Google from going outside of your actual audience that you’re going after.
So if you’re spending a lot on your remarketing campaign and you’re only spending … Let’s assume you’re spending $1000 on driving traffic, but you’re also spending $200 on remarketing.
Okay. Those numbers, that’s not a really good or healthy ratio. So you probably have a couple things checked that shouldn’t be checked and I want to show you where.
I love watching Moneyball. Yes, my wife thinks it’s boring, but I have seen it 3 times and still can’t get enough. It is a story about perseverance, numbers, consistency and a bit of luck. The kind of luck that comes when preparation meets opportunity. The movie is also about how sticking to a plan can produce victory.
The Moneyball plot goes like this: Before the 2002 season, the Oakland A’s had one of the smallest payrolls in baseball, had lost key players to free agency, and team ownership expected them to compete with the big teams like the Angels, Rangers, and Yankees. Billy Beane, the general manager, had a choice – do the same thing as the rest of the league and accept his fate or be bold and try something different to create a better outcome. The results were incredible and revolutionized baseball. The A’s became the first team in over a 100 years in the American League to win 20 straight games.
What changed? The A’s still had a small payroll and few resources. It was Billy Beane’s approach that changed.
Lets start there.
Moneyball Teaches us To:
The majority isn’t always right, yet we tend to accept that since everyone else is doing it then it must be right. Well, that can be a recipe for disaster. Billy Beane was forced to think differently about the game of baseball. He didn’t have a huge budget to lure top players like big market teams. He didn’t have lucrative TV deals and sponsors to generate the resources similar to other clubs. If he was going toe to toe with the competition, doing things the way they did, the A’s were doomed to fail.
So… he focused on what he did have – a great minor league farm system, all the data he could want on players, and the authority to change things up.
Billy’s unique approach changed the team’s priorities, analyzed data differently and focused where the competition wasn’t, such as spending more time looking for great high school players. Billy didn’t blindly follow the rest of baseball, or even listen to his own scouts, instead he looked for a new way to do things to create better results.
Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) hired an assistant who looked at the numbers and not the players. While the rest of the league was obsessed with home runs and batting average, the A’s focus was on base percentage, reducing errors, and favoring matchups that resulted in more wins. Billy wasn’t just looking at numbers differently, he was also looking at the right numbers.
Often times we get so distracted by things that have nothing do with actual performance – in this case, how stable a player’s relationship was with his girlfriend (that was in the movie, btw). By looking at the actual numbers you will see what is really working. If a webpage gives you a 5% conversion rate compared to 2%, does it really matter what the page looks like? Stick to the actual numbers and not the eye. It can be deceiving. For business it is all about the results regardless of what your circumstances or challenges may be.
Results are the name of the game. The movie Moneyball would have never hit the theaters if the Oakland A’s did not achieve results. The same goes for your business. It’s not about traffic, likes, tweets etc. It is about the results – wins! Do what works for you business and if you have not discovered it yet, keep planting the seeds until the success that really matters starts to come. Also remember to hire and surround yourself with people that get results – no matter their age, gender, nationality or sleep habits.
“Your goal shouldn’t be to buy players, your goal should be to buy wins.”
– Billy Beane from the movie Moneyball
Let me illustrate this by a typical conversation I have with business owners.
Me: What are you looking for?
Business: We need to get to the top of Google. Our business is struggling and our numbers are looking ugly. What can you do for me?
Me: Is your goal to get to the top of Google or to get more sales?
Business: Well both, we are looking for SEO experts who can get us to the top.
Me. Getting on page 1 of Google can take a lot of content, time and research. It may or may not produce the conversion. What kind of budget are you setting aside for this?
Business: Well I have my cousin who is charging $500 a month to put me on the first page of Google. We have been with him for 10 months and have not seen much traffic.
Me. Here is the thing; you do not need an SEO guy. Most of them do not understand business. You need sales. Getting to page one of Google may or may not produce sales. You need to research then test, and then test some more. Find out what is actually producing results. You need to capture leads, nurture leads and then convert those leads into loyal customers. Your online marketing efforts need to be focused on results, not hitting page one of Google. Page one of Google will come automatically if you put in the right system.
Make a Plan and See It Through
Once the system is put into place you have to trust that it will work. The Oakland A’s won 20 consecutive games all because Billy Beane had some faith in the system he created. He didn’t cave when ownership started asking questions or the press second-guessed his moves. He stayed the course and the results did come… in a big way!
In marketing you have to have a little faith and some patience too. It’s tempting to instantly jump on board when the next new rookie comes to town – Don’t do it! Why dive into Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter just to leave it all behind for the “next big thing”? Moneyball teaches us to stick to the plan until you see it through.
Stick to the task ’till it sticks to you,
Beginners are many but enders are few.
Honor, power, place and praise
Will come in time to the one who stays.
Stick to the task ’till it sticks to you,
Bend at it, sweat at it, and smile at it too.
For out of the bend, the sweat, and the smile,
Will come life’s victory after awhile.
– Thomas S. Monson
Believe in the System (believe in yourself)
What is the best attribute of a winner? Let me put it this way. I’m a winner and people often times come to me for advice. Why do they? Well, it is not because of my good looks. It is because I believe that I deserve to win no matter the barriers.
“Winners have developed a strong sense of self-worth, regardless of their status. They weren’t necessarily born with these good feelings, but they’ve learned to like themselves through practice.”
– The Key to Winning by Dennis Waitley
The simple practice of believing in yourself will propel you to put in the necessary effort to do what it takes to win. It’s not easy and the first guy through the wall usually gets bloody. There will be opposition, resistance and challenges – count on it. Your belief in the system will be the strength to help get you through to the other side when others are saying “give up”, or “it’s time for something else”.
Oh, and by the way, Billy Beane is still the manager of the Oakland A’s and recently had his contract extended to 2019. The A’s are in the playoffs again this year while the Yankees, Angels and Rangers are all watching from the stands. Think his system still works? Yep, it sure does.
Until next time this is Jace Vernon signing off. Keep up the amazing work and remember to do business the Moneyball way!
Everyone and their mom uses Instagram now-a-days- posting that cute picture of their dog dressed as a ninja turtle for Halloween. Or showing the world their not-so-tasteful outfit while “out with the girls” for the weekend.
Have you noticed that when we Marketers, are enjoying our weekends off as regular people (not marketers, just normal, average, non-marketing people), like other people’s pictures all the time?
Why is that? Why don’t we think about marketing, or associate our friend’s and family’s social posting, with marketing?
BECAUSE REGULAR PEOPLE ARE POSTING REGULAR PEOPLE THINGS. That’s why.
They post pictures of their ninja turtle dog! Post pictures with their friends, or pictures of the ridiculously expensive food that had last night, that they needed to brag about.
They are posting NORMAL STUFF.
They aren’t thinking beyond, “I want everyone to see how totes adorbs my ninja-dog is”.
So when we Marketers are posting for our clients, why do we need to post as if we are pushy spokesmen? Where did we get the idea that people care about our business hashtags, or the “inspiring” quote of the day.
NO ONE CARES!
So people skip it! They skip right on by that post you just spent 20 minutes robbing from the grave, because it doesn’t look appealing!
Which means they are skipping your content! Which means NO engagement on your posts! Which means your audience is ignoring you!
So how do you fix that?
Here are 3 tips for Instagram posting, so you don’t continue to look like a buffoon:
1. REAL, RAW, REGULAR
Perhaps the most vital of all these tips.
Seriously, if you take anything away from this article today, please, let it be this…
As regular people, not marketers, we love seeing cats do silly things, pictures of our best friend’s vacation to Bora Bora.
Or even some guy dancing with a mannequin head on top of his own… Seriously why did that get so popular?
The point is, we normal people, love seeing REAL, RAW, and REGULAR content!
The 3 R’s- Remember those. I just made that up while I was writing this. So let’s go with it…
We are all normal people, so we want to see real, regular pictures and videos. Real posting. Real People.
No one wants to see a stock photo of a silhouette and a sunset.
Try getting some real, authentic content from your client! Post a selfie of the doctor in his operating room. Post a video of something hilarious that happened in the office today. Post a video of the staff making a fool of themselves.
There’s no need to spice up your video and make it pretty with logos- it’s not always necessary.
Just slap that Raw video right on your Instagram story and let it work, work, work, work, work.
If your client is doing something, anything, real- GET THAT CONTENT GIRL. People want to see that the people behind this product or service is REAL.
We’re fun, we’re REAL, we’re raw, we’re regular, and we’re living baby!
2. Stop With The Hashtags…
I mean, no one uses hashtags anymore. The only ones who do, are businesses and marketers. Such as ourselves…
We need to stop forgetting that we’re regular people, not just Marketers.
When you make these big extraordinary plans to post 50 hashtags under a picture, did you stop to think “When’s the last time I, myself, looked something up by a hashtag?”
Never. The answer is never.
Just put away the hashtags because they are #lame….
If you feel the most ravaging itch, and you just absolutely have to use a hashtag on your Instagram post, or else? Just please, for all that is good and holy, post it in the comments. Not on the actual post…
Do the world a favor. Hide those ugly hashtags.
That way they are still there for your own desire, and can be found in the 1/1000 chance that someone looks up a hashtag. But now, it doesn’t make your social post look like a mess of hashtags that no one reads or cares about…
Does this is all sound too #salty?
3. SHORT, SWEET, AND SPACED
I cannot tell you how often I skip, or won’t even read a post, because it looks like the U.S. Constitution down there. Seriously. Like the Bill Of Rights down there.
shakes head No. keeps scrolling
Just a big ol’ paragraph of words. No spaces, no emojis. Just boring words!
Really, who wants to read that? No one wants to see your college admissions essay- put it away…
Here’s the reality- People don’t read anymore.
That’s why we have Siri and Alexa, to read to us, and even to type for us. And Audible, Youtube, Podcasts, and videos in general to read us content that we don’t actually want to, or have time to read.
So keep your posts SHORT AND SWEET, but very much to the point. Our challenge to you is to write a post that is no more than a few sentences. Then a symbol or emoji to create a space. Then give your post a purpose. Like this post for example:
Oh look… our post includes all of the extremely important, don’t-you-dare-forget Tips from above!
It’s a REAL, RAW, AND REGULAR picture of the staff and patient after a procedure! Just a few sentences of SHORT SWEET CONTENT…. And no hashtags…
And most importantly- it USES SPACES…
Yes, I get it, Instagram can be frustrating in this way. You have to actually make a real effort to use emojis or symbols to create spaces in between paragraphs.
I hate putting extra effort into my client’s marketing, which in turn pays my bills… ugh so annoying right?
Thus- keep your posts RAW, REAL, AND REGULAR, while simultaneously keeping it SHORT, SWEET, AND SPACED OUT, without hashtags!
Recently we came across an article that was released by the verge It was titled Google is cracking down On sketchy rehabs. Let’s just say they did. Google has gone in and disabled Keywords that are related to drug rehab programs, Drug rehab treatment centers, And basically anything drug rehab related. Just to give you an understanding the drug rehab industry is a billion dollar industry. The cost per click for these industries are around $100 per click. These treatment centers relied solely on Google to generate their business via pay per click, and now are probably freaking out!
Drug detox center keywords that have been disabled
Drug rehab near me
Addiction recovery center
Addiction recovery treatment
Drug treatment near me
This list literally could keep going on and on. But I just wanted to give you a list of ideas that if you were to Google these phrases no ads will show in regards to the search phrases. Everything at this point for drug detox centers is falling back to the concepts of SEO.
Drug Detox Center Solution For Marketing
Rank YouTube Videos
Ranking YouTube videos is one of The fastest ways that we can get your business to page 1 of Google. Now, what do we mean by rank?Know what we mean by rank is We can rank your video for specific search terms such as, “(States name) Treatment center near me” or (States name) Rehab near me”. When someone googles those phrases your business is showing up on page one. The first solution for your drug detox center is get your videos ranked on google.
Shoot More Videos
Videos are one of the fastest growing things across the Internet. Videos will definitely help brand your business, they will get you the SEO (search engine optimization) you’re looking for, better yet leads and sales. You should easily be creating at least one video a week. There’re way too many resources out there to not allow you to do this. Solution number two is getting out there and shooting more videos!
YouTube ads are very affordable, In this particular campaign that we are running, we are getting $.05 Video views. Our view rate is around 40% which means 40% of our audience is actually engaging with our video, and we have over 7000 impressions. If no one knows your businesses I will tell you what.YouTube it is a fast and easy way to get your message out there. Solution number three is pay for Youtube ads.
The one ad platform that has not been shut down yet for drug detox centers is Facebook. Facebook has so many different variations of Marketing that can work for your business. There are different ways you can market to specific audiences to generate leads, sells, and conversions. This particular ad campaign is running Clicks to the site to see how much our cost per click is around. In this particular instance, we are averaging $1 to $.50. These clicks to site are real people visiting your site. If you were advertising on Google you were paying around $100 per click. Facebook is just a little bit cheaper.
Now, this video view campaign is definitely less expensive than YouTube. You’re getting one cent video views and getting your message out there to your target audience. You’re getting two things from this campaign; One, you’re getting branding; Two, your building a list of people that are interested in your business. This is also known as remarketing.
In this particular campaign, we are remarketing to our list in two different forms one sending them back to the site to visit us again. The other one is what we call a leadgen form. It is a form That appears as an ad in the Facebook news feed, with an offer that the user has to fill out inside of Facebook to receive a free brochure about the treatment center. Thus far this campaign is getting us leads at $24.

Warm up your audience
There’s a bunch of different ways that you can do this. Generally speaking warming up your audiences we use Facebook ads and YouTube ad. This helps create brand awareness, and our message gets out to our target audience. The key to warming up your audience is to show them different content that your drug detox center creates such as video blogs. Your audience will start seeing these messages and will begin to trust you.
Give them something for free
Once you’ve warmed them up, you’ve introduced your business, now it’s time to give them something for free. You got to give them something that is going to educate them, and get them closer to solving their problem. We create guides or free courses that help them solve their problem. For the person to receive the guide or course they must enter their email and then you put them into what we call an email sequence.
Now, this is where the money is at! There’s a phrase out there that says, “The money is in the list”. What’s up, guys. It’s Taylor Timothy with marketinghy.com, and today I want to talk about an article we came across. It was released by the [Verge 00:00:11] and they said, “Google’s is cracking down on sketchy rehabs.” And basically what has happened is Google has gone in and disabled a ton of keywords that are related to drug rehab centers and has completely shut them down. So some of the keywords that they released that they said were shut down were such keywords like rehab, rehab near me, anything drug detox center near me. Everything shut down for these industries. What’s up, guys. It’s Taylor Timothy with marketinghy.com, and today I want to talk about an article we came across. It was released by the [Virge 00:00:11] and they said, “Google’s is cracking down on sketchy rehabs.” And basically what has happened is Google has gone in and disabled a ton of keywords that are related to drug rehab centers and has completely shut them down. So some of the keywords that they released that they said were shut down were such keywords like rehab, rehab near me, anything drug detox center near me. Everything shut down for these industries. The reason why they said that they shut them down is that in this article they said that they found a number of misleading experiences among rehabilitation treatment centers that lead to our decision. Overall, they said that they were ruining the entire industry as far as Google goes and just making a bad experience for users. To give you an understanding of what ads they shut down, I Googled carpet cleaning near me. Basically, these first four spots here, these are papers click ads. So to show you like drug detox near me, there are no more ads anywhere to be found on these search terms. New York drug rehab centers, again no paper click is showing up. Best drug treatment centers in the US, again, no paper click ads are showing up. So overall, this was one of the big streams of revenue for a lot of these rehab centers. A lot of companies are probably freaking out right now as far as the drug treatment centers go, but we do have a solution for you guys at Marketing Hy. What we have come to … we kind of have one thing I want to show you, it’s called ranking videos on YouTube. So to give you an example, I Googled how to clean your shoes. Right here, there’s a video that says, “How to clean your sneakers easy.” We know how to go in and rank videos for specific keywords that pop up in SCO. So we basically could take a video such as your states name and drug detox center near me, and we could rank it so when you Google that your video is popping up on page one. That is one of the solutions we have. I have a number of solutions for you guys that I like to go over. Number one, start shooting more videos. Number two, start ranking your videos and then using those videos that you’ve been shooting to run YouTube ads because you can still run YouTube ads. Start running Facebook video ads and overall creating a sales funnel with these videos. So the main goal is, in the sales funnel you want to warm up your audience. So make sure your audience, you’re educating your audience about your drug rehabilitation center, or rehab center, or detox center, and then going from there and offering them something for free. You guys got to educate your audience about why your drug rehab center’s the best free solutions for parent on how they can educate their children, how they can become better parents. Then last thing you need to do is educate them inside of an email sequence and continue to educate these parents on how they, can become better parents, how they can get their children back on the right path. So, overall, this is a solution, this is what’s going on in your guy’s industry. If you guys have any questions, feel free to reach out to marketinghy.com and we would love to help you guys out. Thanks.
I know, I know…. we are all wondering what is going on with the Google ban on recovery centers?
Before I speak too soon, I want to introduce myself.
Hi everyone! This is McKell from MarketingHy, I am the girl who works with my husband (Chase @MarketingHy) and helps businesses with all of their online marketing needs. I absolutely LOVE what I do and I love helping clients grow their businesses.
Enough about me… if you haven’t already heard about the big ban that Google made on recovery centers earlier today, then I hate to burst your bubble, but it happened.
Before you completely lose your cool, I have a question that you should ask yourself….
“Should you or should you not be concerned about the Google ban on recovery centers?”
My answer is easy…. NO!
There are so many other ways to drive business to your recovery center online.
Ever heard the quote, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”?
This is the perfect analogy for those of you who have only been using Google Adwords to help drive business to your recovery center. If this is you, then I hate to break it to you but it looks like you probably should be concerned about the ban on recovery centers.
On the other hand, for those of us who are being proactive and doing more, then there should be no fear. There is hope!
What are you currently doing for your recovery center’s business?
I work with a lot of different clients, all from very wide spectrums and each client’s online strategy is different. Because each strategy is different, that’s exactly why they are getting results and their recovery center is thriving.
The one strategy that never let’s me down and produces results every time, is a good client testimonial video.
Check out this video I shot for one of my recovery clients. Her name is Jodi and she is probably one of the most strong enduring women that I have met.
The recovery center’s owner and myself wanted to capitalize on client sobriety… so we had this idea to roll out a sober story sequence where we selected clients that had previously been thru the recovery program and were celebrating their “sober birthday” (how long had they been sober for).
With each client that told their story, it was so specific and special for each of them. There was a lot of meaning and vulnerability that came with each story told.
By being able to capture a video of something so intimate for these recovery clients, it was exactly what my recovery center needed and it’s exactly what every recovery center needs.
Addicts want to know that they are not alone. They want to know that the recovery center they choose is one with validity and heart.
I am getting personal over here for a second, so bare with me… I am the type of girl, that has raging emotions both happy and sad ones. So to be honest, filming each of these clients telling their story was extremely emotional for me. I was behind the camera with tears rolling down my cheeks.
Without fail, each client that shared their story with me, resulted in mascara running down my face. It was such a special experience for me to be apart of.
So what I wanted to do was capture a video in a way that spoke to me, that would also be able to speak to other addicts that might be struggling with the same thing.
This is why I wanted to create a video that would hit other addicts right in the sweet spot. Nothing too pushy, or cheesy, just raw, real video.
Advertising on social media
Social media is exciting and the potential is endless (there is nothing that gets me or Chase more excited unless it’s chocolate cheesecake).
The coolest part about social media is the ability to be able to connect with so many other individuals that have similar interests, values, and beliefs.
The more transparent we can be as individuals, and as a brand, the more we are going to thrive in an industry that is needed by many.
Drug addicts want to know that there is help for them. They want to know that they are not the only person who is struggling with an addiction. They want to know that they can change their life. And more importantly, they want to know that it is possible.
This is EXACTLY why video is working so well for my recovery clients.
Here are some stats on a Facebook video ad that I am running with the video of Jodi that I shared with you earlier.
By combining both Facebook and a great video into one, I was able to help out my recovery center immensely and don’t have to even think twice about the Google ban on recovery centers.
Think outside of the box and try something new. Whether it’s video, an email blast, or new headline on your landing page, don’t be afraid to try it!
And… more importantly, DON’T be afraid of the Google Ban on recovery centers!
